About Rhapsody

Napster was founded by two teenagers in 1999. It began as a peer-to-peer music-sharing platform, where users could upload files and others could download whatever they found. Everyone can use its free software application to share digital music files. It pioneered a new way to obtain music from the internet, and at the time, people were obsessed with discovering new music on Napster. And Napster grew in popularity, with nearly 80 million users signing up on its network at its peak.

Napster is a Seattle, Washington-based music streaming service. Napster began as an audio search engine called Aladdin, which was purchased by Listen.com in May 2001 and served as the foundation for its new streaming service, Rhapsody, which debuted in December of the same year. Rhapsody was the first streaming on-demand music subscription service to offer unlimited access to a large library of digital music for a flat monthly fee, based on the Open Music Model principles. RealNetworks purchased Rhapsody in August 2003, in anticipation of the launch of Apple's iTunes store. Rhapsody relaunched as a separate company from former parent RealNetworks on April 6, 2010. Downloaded files are subject to usage restrictions imposed by Helix, Rhapsody's version of digital rights management enforced on AAC+ or WMA files.

Rhapsody International and the Napster name were sold for $70 million to virtual reality concert company MelodyVR on August 25, 2020, which renamed itself Napster Group PLC following the takeover. Napster was sold to Hivemind and Algorand on May 10, 2022.

Tim Bratton, J.P. Lester, Sylvain Rebaud, Alexandre Brouaux, Nick Sincaglia, and Dave Lampton began developing a new streaming audio engine in 1999. This engine was commercially deployed in the TuneTo.com customized radio service, as well as in their Aladdin "celestial jukebox" prototype.

TuneTo.com was acquired in April 2001 by Listen.com, a San Francisco-based startup founded by author and entrepreneur Rob Reid who had built a large online music directory. During the summer and fall of 2001, Aladdin was transformed into the Rhapsody music service, which was launched on December 3, 2001.

Rhapsody was the first streaming on-demand music subscription service to provide unlimited access to a large library of digital music for a flat monthly fee, a concept supported by business theories like the Open Music Model. At the time of its launch, Rhapsody's library consisted primarily of content from Naxos Records and a few independent labels. Throughout 2002, they obtained licenses from EMI, BMG, Warner Bros. Records, and Sony to include their music on the service. Rhapsody added Universal Records to their catalog in July 2002, becoming the last of the five major record labels at the time.

On April 21, 2003, RealNetworks announced plans to acquire Listen.com, one week before the launch of the iTunes Music Store on April 28, 2003. On August 3, 2003, the transaction was completed. The Rhapsody service was briefly known as RealRhapsody shortly after the acquisition, but was since shortened back to "Rhapsody".

By 2004, some blogs, such as "Rhapsody Radish," were providing playlist sharing with comments. Music On the Go (MOG) partnered with Rhapsody in late 2007 to provide Rhapsody subscribers with access to all of Rhapsody's content via MOG. RealNetworks formed Rhapsody America, a joint venture with music broadcast network MTV, in August 2007. The service's underpinning software would be derived from MTV's Urge, a defunct music service developed in collaboration with Microsoft.

Napster was sold to the blockchain company Algorand and the crypto-focused investment firm Hivemind on May 10, 2022. Emmy Lovell was named CEO of Napster following the sale. Napster released a new version of its music streaming app with updated branding on June 8, 2022.

The Rhapsody Music Software was a free program that assisted in organizing music collections and synchronizing them in MP3 portable media players (PMP) with the Rhapsody subscription service. It competed with Apple Inc.'s iTunes software. Rhapsody 4 is the most recent version of the software as of September 2013. Rhapsody 5 was postponed because the Rhapsody product team believed that the company's future success would be in mobile apps and began developing apps for iOS (iPhone), Android, BlackBerry OS, and Verizon Wireless's app store, all of which were available by 2011. Rhapsody Music Software was discontinued after the release of mobile apps.

The service, however, did not last long. Napster was found to violate copyright laws. The RIAA claimed that Napster was distributing unauthorized copyrighted material. Later that year, in 2001, Napster was forced to close its doors. Since then, the brand has evolved significantly. The most notable is that Rhapsody, a music streaming service, has agreed to acquire subscribers from Napster. Rhapsody rebranded its service as Napster and launched a paid subscription service in 2016, and it is now one of the on-demand music streaming platforms.

Napster's Premier subscription is free for new users with a 30-day trial, then $9.9/month.
