About AT&T U-Verse

AT&T acquired DirecTV in one of the largest mergers in American history in July of 2015. AT&T has been caught between a rock and a hard place with its two cable providers: DirecTV vs U-verse… and it's obvious that DirecTV is the favorite. Is U-verse going to be around for a long time? Most likely not. Given AT&T U-online verse's reviews and AT&T's lack of action in response to U-massive verse's lack of reliability, there's little reason to believe things will improve. Nonetheless, there is some value in this service. As a result, you may be wondering, "Is U-verse worth it in the meantime?" You're about to learn.

Since acquiring DirecTV, AT&T has launched two different streaming services: DirecTV Now and WatchTV, which comes packaged with AT&T's unlimited phone plans. When you combine that with AT&T's own website declaring that video will account for more than 75% of their traffic by 2022, it's not difficult to believe that the rumors from employees about them running their TV services through their 5G towers are true.

DirecTV NOW appears to be AT&T's future, but because they aren't pushing it too hard, questions have arisen about whether they will launch yet another service to further monopolize the TV market. It doesn't help that there is no indication that 4K features will be added to any of their U-verse packages.

Overall, U-prices verse's are excellent, especially given that it has the same number of channels as many more deluxe services. However, just like most TV providers, U-verse costs skyrocket after the first year. The good news is that you're only signing a one-year deal. That's correct. Although the prices for half of the packages double after the first year, customers have the option to call and negotiate lower prices or seek a better deal elsewhere. Isn't it strange?

While the government has been trying to break up what is essentially a monopoly, one has to wonder why AT&T isn't lowering their prices to account for the fact that they no longer have to pay Time Warner to use some of these channels, such as HBO, truTV, and Cartoon Network. Is their monopoly being used to steer the public toward their preferred service?

Except for HBO and CINEMAX, U-U-300 verse's package includes all of the premiums. Why? I'm not certain. Their add-on versions of those two aren't much better: $26 a month to get 'em. However, this is still better than HBO or CINEMAX as standalone streaming services ($15 per month). Although U-verse appears to offer a wide range of sports, the majority of them are not included in the base package. Most sports require the U-200 ($60) package, but unlike DirecTV, U-verse includes Pac-12!

Everything depends on what you watch. If you want it for the whole family, we'd recommend U-200 at the very least. It has the best of everything for family TV and something for everyone in your household to watch. The following package includes many movie and premium channels that most households do not watch.

It all depends on which ones you watch if the people in your home prefer movies and premium channels. If you prefer to watch Encore, Showtime, or Starz, you're stuck and forced to upgrade to the U300 package. If you only watch HBO and Cinemax, choose one of the three lower packages and add HBO and Cinemax right on top! The $50 price difference between U300 and U400 is egregious and entirely unnecessary. You can get these two channels for free for three months on any package and then pay a reasonable $26 after the deal expires. If HBO is all you care about, there's no need to include it in your TV package. The streaming service is only $15 per month.

The Total Home DVR option from U-verse isn't bad: you can record up to four shows at once, with up to 165 hours of HD storage capacity on the top end. However, the lowest end of the spectrum only provides around 37 HD hours – not ideal. In either case, the Total Home DVR is nowhere near as good as DISH's Hopper 3 or DIRECTV's Genie. However, the Total Home DVR offers twice the simultaneous recording capacity of the Hopper DUO and more than Cox's standard DVR – so if you don't require the super-sized power of the Hopper 3 or Genie, U-verse will suffice for most people. Expect to have to delete recordings to free up space on a regular basis.

U-verse does not rely solely on one method to deliver your TV channels: they use a combination of methods. Most cable TV providers (think Xfinity) use copper coaxial cables, while Verizon Fios TV uses fiber-optic cables to deliver your favorite networks to your TV. U-verse uses either pure fiber-optic or a hybrid of coaxial and fiber-optic.

The U-verse mobile app is solid: it functions as a remote control. You can use your regular remote to do anything and everything, as well as set up your DVR to record your favorite shows. And, of course, you can watch live TV as well as your recorded shows on the go. But what's even better? You can stream TV and recordings data-free if your phone is connected to AT&T's cellular service. That's right: watching U-verse shows live or on demand does not consume data.
